Griffith's.Valuation
Sir Richard Griffith's Primary Valuation of Tenements 1857
The Tenement Act of 1842 provided for a valuation of all property in Ireland, It was undertaken by Richard Griffith, the Commissioner of Valuation, and became known as "Griffith's Valuation".
The two parishes in Moville were surveyed in 1857. However, the Donegal Libraries website states "although the publication dates for County Donegal are stated to be 1857-58, there is strong evidence to suggest that the valuation was carried out up to a decade earlier. It is known, for instance, that some persons listed as being present in 1857-58 had died in the Famine."
The survey was used to determine the tax levied on individuals towards the support of the poor in the local Poor Law Union (in this case Inishowen). This involved valuing all privately held lands and buildings to establish their rental value. The valuation shows the townland address and householder's name, the landlord, a description of the property; the acreage and the rateable valuation.
The Valuation was never intended as a census substitute. However, due to the loss of all Census records before 1901 it gives the only detailed guide to who lived where in Ireland in the mid-19th century, and what property they possessed. For a guide to the genealogical information available from the Valuation, click HERE.
Please click on the townland name or the surname to view the names of the tenants. Once you have identified your ancestor, we suggest that you visit the Ask about Ireland web site. It has made available online copies of the original Valuation, which can be printed as a permanent record. There are also links to the Valuation maps, so that you can identify the exact plot tenanted by your ancestor. There is no charge to view these records.
