Poll Tax.Ordinance
Poll Tax Ordinance 1660 - Barrony of Enishowen
The Poll Tax was levied from time to time, mainly to provide money for military purposes. It was collected in Ireland from 24 April 1660. The order stated that "every person above the age of fifteen years of either sex...under the degree or quality of a yeoman, or farmer yeoman, or farmer's wife or widdow shall pay twelve pence"
A second ordinance, passed by the same Convention, dated 01 March 1661, doubled the tax on those above 15 years of age, and imposed higher levies on people of particular ranks and degrees. The tax was known as "Pole-money".
'Able and discreet Protestants' appointed by County Commissioners were 'to enquire of all and every person within the respective places limited to their care, of each sex, of and above the age of 15 years', of their ranks, qualities and degrees, and of the dwelling and abiding places of such persons."
The records show the names recorded for the Poll Tax survey, and their frequency. They cover the whole of the Barony of Inishowen, not just Moville. No information about townlands or individuals is available.
